Jesus Wasn’t “Glorified” at His Resurrection. It Was His Ascension

When was Jesus Glorified?

———

John 7:39

39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

– Time statement 1 : the glorification of Christ had to come BEFORE the Spirit was given

John 12:16

16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.

– Time statement 2: Jesus was glorified BEFORE the disciples (plural) died (indeed, John was writing this gospel)

John 16:4-7

4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

– Time statement 3: the Spirit would come to them AFTER Jesus left

Acts 2:33-36

33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand

35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’

36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

– Time statement 4: when Jesus Christ was exalted (glorified?), He received the Spirit and poured it out

Luke 24:26

26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”

– Time statement 5: unless you think the tomb or hades was the glory of Christ, he is speaking of His ascension in the latter part of this verse

1 Timothy 3:16

16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

He[a] was manifested in the flesh, vindicated[b] by the Spirit,[c]seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

– Time statement 6: clearly, “taken up in glory” was the ascension of Christ.

You see, Christ wasn’t raised into spiritual body, but a physical one, to show His power over death. He ate and drank with His disciples, and said so Himself:

Luke 24:39

See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”

But Paul told us in NO uncertain terms how are resurrected selves would be:

1 Corinthians 15:

35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another.41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. 42 So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”;[e] the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall[f] also bear the image of the man of heaven.

Did Paul ever disagree with Jesus? No. For Jesus said:

Mark 12:25

For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
